Child sexual abuse (CSA) involves a breach of trust and/or exploitation of vulnerability. The greatest risk to our children doesn’t come from strangers, but from people we know and trust.
Estimated 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday.
Children who are victims of sexual abuse:
- 90% know their abuser
- 60% abused by people the family trusts
- 40% abused by older or more powerful children
- 30% abused by family members
- 10% or less abused by a stranger
Definition of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA):
Sexual act between an adult and a minor OR between two minors when one exerts power over the other
Forcing, coercing, or persuading a child to engage in any type of sexual act or sexual contact
Non-Contact acts such as exhibitionism, exposure to pornography, voyeurism, or communicating in a sexual manner by phone or internet
Commercial sexual exploitation of children where sexual activity involves a child and something of value is given or promised
Reduce the Risks:
- Avoid adults meeting with a child one on one in isolated areas
- Avoid meeting in hidden & secluded areas
- Make sure interactions between adult and child can be observed & interrupted unexpectedly
- Monitor internet use and who your child is texting
